 Local economy is related to turism, olive oil production, farming, sheep and goat herdering and fishing. Name of the village is directly related to the existing mid age castle.

The Castle (Fortress). Built by the Venetians in 1371- 74 castle function was to serve as a garrison to control and impose order on the Sfakia region, supress rebellions, deter pirates and protect Venetian development in the area. Named by Venetians as Saint Nikitas Castle after nearby church- Frangokastello never gave positive impression to the locals, however. Sfakians contemptuously dubbed it "Frangokastello", meaning the Castle of the Franks- Catholic foreigners. The name eventually stuck and was adopted by the same Franks (Venetians) as well passing the stages as Castelfranco or Franco Castello etc. Frangokastello (castle) has a simple rectangular shape, tower at each corner and the Venetian coat of arms above the main gate. The constructions within the walls, and the battlements were builded during the Ottoman Turkish occupation. Very well preserved the Castle symbolize second Frangokastello diamond right after the send beach. Looks like that with several horses and Venetian dressed actors one could "travel" in mid age in no time. The Castle is going to stay there forever, and same- that's general feeling.. Frangokastello is an ideal model and many amateurs or professional painters were painting the Castle. There's even a Country (Greek) stamp with a Frangokastello painting on it. The Village (Settlement). Located ( large map) on the South coast of Crete 12 kilometers (East) from Chora Sfakion and 86 kilometers (South) of Hania- Frangokastello lies on gently shelving, fine sand beach backed by beautifull mountains... more..

How to come. Frangokastello lies 3km off the main road, just under 10km from the junction with the Hora Sfakion-Vrisses road (buses divertalong the road trough the village). A series of isolated dwellings dotted across a plain between mountains and Lybian sea, it's curious place to arrive in as there's no centre or square as such, leaving you with little option but going straight forward trough the settlement. After few kilometers you'll see the Oasis on your right side with a tinny asphalt road going afront of apartments to our parking and restaurant.
